Data Stewardship

Rationale

Data stewardship entails the careful and responsible management of data within an organization.  It involves doing the necessary and prudent things to ensure that data is all of the following:

  • protected
  • accurate
  • reliable
  • available
  • well-defined
  • consistent
  • usable

IT and business organizations have a combined responsibility with regards to data stewardship.  IT organizations are generally responsible for managing the applications and systems used to create, capture, store, process, retrieve, and delete data.  Business organizations are generally responsible for the actual content of the data and the rules used to create, capture, store, process, retrieve, and delete that data.

IT professionals should assume any data they encounter to be confidential unless directed otherwise.
