Classroom Exams

Service

We score Scantron-based exams, quizzes and other classroom assessments that have an answer key. The scoring software we use is Remark, from Gravic, Inc.

Remark and our new Scantron image scanner have the ability to capture student marking errors from the Scantron sheets. We review these errors and make corrections before the exams are scored. A new feature: students can now use ink pen.

Results are returned electronically via Box, a web-based collaboration and file storage platform available for all faculty, staff and students at NU. Click here for directions in getting set up to receive exam data via Box.

We strive for a 24-hour weekday turnaround for exam processing.

Result Options

Remark offers several different report options in four different categories: item analysis, test and item statistics, class and student reports, and changed answer reports. Click here for a list of reports, their options, and samples. Reports are in color and are chart and graph based. Colors can be modified on request for ADA purposes.

A .csv Excel file is also included that has student names, IDs (if desired), and scores. These can easily be converted and uploaded into the Blackboard or Canvas gradebooks. Evaluations

We also process course evaluation reports, using Remark, the same software we use for exam processing.

Teaching Analysis by Students, or TABS, is an evaluation for accessing student feedback at mid-semester. This is a good way to gauge classroom opinion with time left in the semester to make necessary changes. TABS employs a 26-question sheet using our blue Scantron form 4521. The results report for TABS is identical to the course evaluation report.

Turnaround time for fall and spring end-of-semester evaluations is slower than exams because of the large volume of requests for evaluation scoring and the final exam testing load. Most evaluation sets are processed within 2-3 weeks. Please note that under special circumstances, an instructor's evaluation may be processed ahead of others.

Result Options

Our standard report displays: the text of each question, number of forms scanned, number of blank responses, frequency distribution, mean, median, and standard deviation. Click here to see a sample of an evaluation report.

Research and Surveys

Service

Survey questionnaires or research projects that can be collected on our five- or ten-response standard Scantron answer sheets can be scored for a fee. Our new Remark software has templates of many other Scantron form types. Please contact us if you’re interested in conducting a project using sheets other than our standard ones, and we can tell you if we can process them.

Result Options

Surveys are scored using Remark. Our standard results set is identical to our course evaluation report. Remark has other options as well, such as learning objectives. Contact us for a consultation to see what we can do for you.

More Info

  • Further analysis of results may be done by using the raw data in an Excel file, which we can provide upon request.
  • Results are not e-mailed for security purposes. Reports and Excel grade files are only sent electronically—we no longer print them.
  • We do not destroy forms. You can pick them up in our office, send a courier, or provide an envelope for us to send them via campus mail.
  • Forms will be returned by campus mail if they have been in our office over 30 days.
