What is Microsoft Office 365?
Office 365 is a cloud-based set of products including desktop applications (Microsoft Office suite) and server products (including Exchange e-mail, SharePoint collaboration, and Lync instant messaging).  For now, only the Exchange e-mail and Lync instant messaging will be implemented at UNL.

What does "cloud-based" and "in the cloud" mean?
Cloud computing, or being "in the cloud," means that a third-party (in this case, Microsoft) provides the applications via the Internet and stores the data on their servers.

Is my information safe "in the cloud"?
Multiple copies of your data are stored for redundancy purposes.  The data is encrypted when accessed from the server.  The end result is an online service that has the equivalent reliability and security as an on-campus server.

How will I access Office 365 e-mail, calendar, and contacts?
Office 365 is accessible through your web browser or via recent Microsoft Outlook clients.  Third-party clients such as Mac Mail and Thunderbird can use IMAP to receive e-mail. However, other functions, such as calendaring and global address book, will not work.

Is a different password required to open the email account in Outlook and/or the Office 365 web client?
No, unless you're using a different password than AD for notes username and password.

When sending an attachment, does the file size increase?
Yes, attaching a file will increase the size of the message.  Messages are limited to 25 MB, including the message text and the sum of all attachments.  Files can expand by up to 30% when sent.  We recommend using Box or Filesender when sharing large files.

Can you run two email accounts at the same time in either Outlook or Office 365 Web?
Yes, in Outlook, multiple accounts can easily be setup and they can be accessed simultaneously.  In Office 365 Web, there is a link provided to open another Office 365 account that you have access to, such as a departmental account.

What will the off-campus email sender see if they try to send an attachment >25MB?
Many off campus email systems have message size limits lower than 25 MB.  If we receive a message larger than 25 MB, Office 365 will generate a bounce-back message to the sender stating the message exceeds our size limit.

Does Office 365 support CalDEV?
The native mac mail and calendar apps will work for Office 365 if the OS X version is 10.6 or higher.

Does Office 365 or Outlook block certain file types?

The following file types are blocked by Outlook and/or the Office 365 servers.  Files using any of these extensions cannot be attached to messages in Outlook because of the potential for introducing a virus into your computer.  If you need to send files with any of these extensions, we recommend using Box or Filesender:
