Digital Materials Initiative

Digital Materials Initiative

The Digital Materials Initiative is a partnership across the university to provide affordable course materials to students. Campus partners include: Academic Affairs, the University Libraries, Innovative Instructional Design, ITS, and the University Bookstore. While the initiative is still in the planning stages, we will have limited pilot opportunities during the Spring 2018 semester.

Features

Open Education Resources (OER)

Kelly Grant Initiative - Funds from a $50,000 grant will be made available for faculty who qualify for redesigning course material to OER. The Grant team, consisting of staff from Innovative Instructional Design, Libraries and Information Technology Services (ITS), will provide support and resources to aid in course redesigns. This initiative will focus on high enrollment courses.

UNL Libraries LibGuide - UNL Libraries has created a guide to support the increased awareness and use of open educational resources (OERs) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. https://unl.libguides.com/oers

Unizin

Pressbooks - The Pressbook platform is a digital publishing tool that is available to all Unizin member institutions. This is a software solution for faculty to allow creation of OER materials. Support for using this platform will be made available through ITS and other university partners. This initiative will focus on high-enrollment courses.

Engage Pilot - Funding will be made available to qualifying low-enrollment courses to cover the cost of publisher provided materials. The Unizin Engage tool provides lower costs to many publisher textbooks and student usage analytics.

Engage Tool  - The Unizin Engage team provides support for loading course materials into the Engage tool and negotiates pricing for selected vendors that participate in this program, such as Pearson and Cengage. Some discounts are up to 70 percent lower than direct purchase through the vendor.

All types of content can be loaded into the Engage tool. This can be textbooks purchased through a publisher, OER textbooks available online and instructor created content.

The Engage tool also provides analytics of student use of the course materials, notes for students that can be shared, and a way for students to post questions to the instructor within the OER materials.

A Canvas course called Engage101 is available for anyone who wants to see how Engage works and can enroll upon request to canvas@unl.edu.
