Canvas (by Instructure) is a cloud based learning management system (LMS) that is currently used by more than 700 colleges and universities. The university will transition to Canvas from Blackboard for all LMS activity by Summer, 2018. Blackboard access will end May 15, 2018. Data will not be retrievable after June 1, 2018.

Canvas provides a set of tools focused on improving teaching and learning through a modern interface, and the ability to extend the platform to outside tools and systems. Some of its most notable features as identified by UNL and our Big Ten peers are:

Getting Started

Get to Know Canvas

Canvas is a new learning management system at UNL that some instructors may have opted to use this semester. It's a lot like Blackboard, but there are some differences. Here's a list of tips and links to help you get the semester off to a smooth start. 

Faculty Links:

  1. Be sure to bookmark the login URL for Canvas: my.unl.edu
  2. Users need to archive their old Blackboard content: go.unl.edu/bbchecklist
  3. Faculty may self-enroll in our Canvas 101 teacher training course (Canvas login using your Blackboard credentials required)
  4. Use the help button to get Canvas Help and get to know the Canvas Community
  5. Be sure to set up your profile 
  6. Be sure to set your notification settings
  7. For information on Blackboard organizations, click here: http://go.unl.edu/bborgs
  8. Canvas help for faculty can also be obtained by contacting the instructional designer(s) supporting your college
  9. Contact UNL-ITS for training and assistance with migration: canvas@unl.edu

Access to Blackboard ends May 15th, 2018 Monday, December 18, 2017

Canvas is the default Learning Management System (LMS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Students: please review your student assignments (projects, papers) in Blackboard and download the material you want to save/have access to. Access to Blackboard will end on May 15, 2018. Instructions for downloading your student content is available via the Student Guide.

Faculty: Canvas is the default LMS at UNL, the Spring 2018 semester is the final semester for access to Blackboard. All courses must be migrated from Blackboard to Canvas by May 15, 2018. Instructions for downloading Blackboard content is available via the Faculty Guide. If you need assistance with migrating or downloading your Blackboard course(s), please contact the LMS team at canvas@unl.edu Instructions are available at: https://its.unl.edu/services/canvas/end-blackboard-checklist

"Ask Us About Canvas" sessions no longer offered Tuesday, October 31, 2017

"Ask Us About Canvas" sessions will no longer be offered in the Nebraska Unions, Love Learning Commons or Henzlik Hub.

Canvas Tea Time sessions will continue to be held on Thursday afternoons from 2-4 pm in 217 Brace Lab. If that time does not work with your schedule, please contact canvas@unl.edu and we will schedule a time to meet with you.
