At UNL, administrative and faculty staff can make direct dial long distance domestic and international calls from your desk phone. In order to assure secure, quality communications we recommend that personnel dial international numbers directly from their desk phones. Those calls will incur charges as shown in the attached rate table. However, lower rates can be achieved via international phone cards or specialty cell phone plans. If you have a question about long distance service, please contact Client Services at 2-3434
All domestic direct dialed calls will be billed at $.04 per minute, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Note that the domestic rate of $.04 per minute applies to Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
International rates for many countries are available on the International Long Distance Rate Table.
For domestic long distance calls dial: 9 + 1 + Area Code + XXX-XXXX
For international long distance calls:
1 First, dial 9 from a campus telephone to exit the university telephone system (note, not all telephones on campus allow long distance dialing).
2 Next, dial the IDD (International Direct Dialing Number). (The IDD from the United States is 011)
3 Third, dial the country code of the country you are trying to call. (Every country has a country code, which you dial after the IDD. In some cases, the country code is shared among countries. For example, the United States, Canada, and much of the Caribbean and Guam use country code 1).
4 Fourth, dial the city/area code (if any) for the number you are dialing. (Smaller countries may not use city codes or area codes, while larger countries have hundreds of them. Because of the tremendous growth of global telecommunications, city codes and area codes change or are added frequently).
5 Fifth, dial the local seven digit telephone number for the party you wish to call.
Example: Calling from a UNL campus telephone to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
1. Look up the Country Code for Brazil; (55)
2. Look up the Area Code for Rio
3. Dial the phone number you wish to call
Dialing sequence: 9 + 011 + 55 + 21 + XXX-XXXX
Example: Calling from a UNL campus telephone to Vancouver, B.C.
1. Look up the Country Code for Canada (1)
2. Look up the Area Code for Vancouver (604)
3. Dial the phone number you wish to call
Dialing sequence: 9 + 011 + 1 + 604 + XXX-XXXX
